It has been a long time and I have missed this space. I couldn’t be happier to be back here, better than I ever imagined. The last two years have been a whirlwind. When I made the tough decision to stop taking photography commissions at the beginning of 2015, there was a void left in my soul. At the time, it was the hardest but most responsible decision I’ve ever had to make. DBP was growing faster than I anticipated and I was deathly afraid to go full-time with this dream. I had a career I absolutely loved and didn’t feel quite ready to give it up.
Well, in February of that year I was laid off, but instead of listening to the clear signs and dedicating myself to DBP, I got myself a new role in a new field a few weeks later. Because I was in this new unknown world, and also fiercely pursuing The Boudoir Collective, I couldn’t dedicate myself to my DBP clients the way I really wanted to – and the way they deserved. So in April, I decided to say farewell to this dream. Like I said, completely difficult yet mature. [In hindsight, I was standing in my own way and allowed fear to cloud my judgment. But life. Life knows.]
Fast forward to August 2016 where I found myself suddenly unemployed but with the unique opportunity to pursue my passion once more. And so here I am. Except, I’m not alone. When I started to spruce up the back-end of DBP, I reached out to my old photog-bestie, Sara, to share the news that I was back in the biz. As luck would have it, she had a beautiful wedding coming up in a few weeks and invited me to be her second. We chatted pretty regularly leading up to the wedding and one day, my fingers typed something crazy!
“We should just become a photography team”. To my surprise, she said something along the lines that she would be open to that. And then I did what I do best, research. I looked up every blog post, every Entrepreneur article, and sent them to her. All with high-notes on why this was a good idea! Then the wedding day came, and per usual, we absolutely rocked it! Simply put, she’s just the yin to my yang in this photography world. And everything else that’s corny about your other-half. But it’s true. After a lot of phone calls, long meetings, and endless texts – we decided we were just better together and that this was such a good thing for us both!
So we did all of the responsible things one does when setting up a partnership and here we are, a photography team! The new Dainty Blue!
Sara and I share so many similarities, including our resemblance! Our clients even think we’re sisters, and so we fondly call each other “sis”. The best part is how in-tune our philosophies are; from everything to how we view our clients, the industry, our business, and life. It’s a blessing!
Sara is a wonderful human, that I love and admire! But don’t take my word for it! Get to know her for yourselves! (And don’t miss my hilarious commentary!)
Who was the biggest influence in your life?
I’ve been blessed to be around many people that I consider role models, but as of late, I’ve been realizing how much my mom influenced my life and how so much of her teachings and words follow me around everywhere I go. She was a stay at home mom of FIVE girls (Yes! You read that correctly), that single fact alone makes her one of my heroes. She is a woman of so much character and so full of life and joy regardless of situations life throws at her. I am blessed to be her daughter ☺
M: Aw! She’s so sweet! I’ve met her mother and she is lovely!
What kind of things really makes you laugh?
My 3-year-old daughter has been a great source of laughter as of late. I think EVERYTHING a 3-year-old says is either extremely cute or hilarious.
M: As an owner of a 3-year-old, I will agree.
What is your favorite place in the entire world
My home country Honduras will always be my favorite place in the world.
M: She does love her motherland!
Favorite movie of all time? Why?
Mar Adentro (The sea Inside). This movie was my first introduction to Javier Bardem (who has become one of my favorite actors since then). This movie narrates the story of a quadriplegic and his journey through life. Needless to say, it is thought-provoking, inspiring, and it just gives me all the feels ☺
M: Going to add that one to my watch list. But I agree Javier Bardem is an excellent actor!
Favorite way to spend a Saturday?
Laying out by the beach reading a good book.
M: I’m going to have to investigate this one further because I can’t get her to read our book club book so something isn’t right here! Did I not pick a good book?!
Do you have any pet peeves?
I hate when someone calls me on my phone and then immediately says “hold on” and then they have a complete conversation with someone else while I’m waiting on the line and listening to their conversation. Hmmm… Why do you call me if you can’t talk to me at the moment??
M: I wonder if she’s talking about me? She knows I always have 10 people talking to me at once!
What was your family like growing up?
Pretty crazy. I grew up in a house of 6 girls (my poor dad had to put up with that). Our days were filled with many play sessions, and just as many fight sessions. Normal sibling life you know? ☺
What should I know about you that I’d never think to ask about?
I moved from Honduras to Michigan to attend college. Yes, MICHIGAN! I still don’t know how I dared to do that. It was FREEZING and a complete change in culture, but I’m so glad I did! Some of the best humans I know are from Michigan. They really do have the nicest people with the biggest hearts.
M: Sara has the most amazing story. She’ll have to blog about it sometime!
Do you have a nickname? What’s the story behind it?
Shaly. My older sister was not able to pronounce my name and ended up calling me that instead.
M: She forgot “sis”
What superpower do you wish you had?
Fly. I would love to skip all the Miami traffic and save some $$ on gas ☺
M: Let’s just leave it at skipping the Miami traffic! #theworst
What time in your past would you happily relive again?
My high school years. Those were the best days. ☺
M: She’s definitely the only person I know that would say that! lol
What food could you not live without?
Like a true Honduran, RED BEANS, I cannot live without them.
M: Yum! Us Dominicans live on red beans, too! You see?! We even love the same foods! lol #forevertwinning!
If you could move anywhere, where would it be?
I was talking to my husband about this the other day. I really want to move to Vancouver, Canada (temporarily)… It is COLD there, but oh soooo beautiful!
M: Well, you’re not allowed to move anywhere. So. Forget about that!
What is your dream car?
M: Get it!!!! #TheDaintyMobile
Depends on the time of the year, but right now I’m dreaming of a cold wintery snow filled vacation in a cottage on the mountains.
M: Oh goodness yes! Sounds like my dream vacation, too!
Strange habit that you have?
I always leave at least one bite of food on my plate. Why? I have no idea! I get full right when I see there is only one bite left. Is that weird? Anyone else our there that does this? Anyway, it always happens and it drives my husband crazy.
M: I’m going to have to look at her plate next time.
Not learning to play an instrument.
M: It’s never too late sis!
Have you ever met a celebrity?
Hmmm… Define ‘met’? I have seen several because I used to live in NYC, but I guess the more official one was John Krasinski (Jim from ‘The Office’). I took a picture with him, so, I can prove it! ☺
M: I love that show!
Have you ever watched all seasons in an entire show in one day or two?
Yes! Many! Thank you, Netflix/Amazon Prime ☺. Just to name a few: Friday Night Lights, Dexter, Stranger Things, Bloodline…
M: Binge days are my favorite!
Show you’ve cried the most at?
Sons of Anarchy
M: Hmmm… I wonder on which parts?!
Movie you’ve cried at the most?
City of Angels
M: I don’t think I’ve ever seen this movie.
Favorite cereal type?
What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
M: Ugh! Yes!
If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?
M: I wonder why?! lol
If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?
M. Can you not do that as a mortal? lol
The best part of waking up is?
M: Can’t believe this doesn’t say coffee!
Biting my nails.
M: 🙁 me too!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“The only person you can change is yourself”
Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Friends, Modern Family
M: Well, none of those are my favorites, except for maybe Friends, but it’s ok. We don’t have to have EVERYTHING in common lol
At the moment Mumford and Sons
M: She’s a little late to this party!
Summer. I love the long days ☺
M: We live in Florida! How could you?! #worstseasonever #eternalsummer
Red or White wine?
M: Yes! <3
We have a lot of blog posts coming up so stay tuned!
